Space Haikus, Solar System, Poetry
Earth Day was Monday, April 22nd. Students who earned the previous week's Friday celebration made these fun earths to float in our classroom. They colored coffee filters with blue and green markers. We then sprayed them with water and let them dry.
They turned out great!
We've been learning about the solar system as well as working on poetry. After researching MANY, MANY facts, students wrote haikus about the different planets to show what they know. A haiku is a poem that has three lines and doesn't have to rhyme. Lines 1 and 3 have five syllables, and Line 2 has seven syllables.

The students made travel brochures for the planet of their choice. We are displaying them in the hallway for people to read.
Our Solar System in the hallway...The students made the planets and fact lists for each planet. They also wrote haikus and made the travel brochures which are displayed.
We also learned about acrostic poetry. The students chose a topic and wrote it on the cloud. Then on the color strips they wrote sentences to describe the topic. The first letter of each sentence had to spell out the word vertically.

Exploring Space and Adjective Fun!
We've been having such fun learning about the solar system. The students have researched facts about the Sun and each planet...They've even taught me a thing or two about them!
Below you'll find pictures of the solar system we made.
Now that the students are planet experts, they are writing haikus (because we're also working on poetry!) and travel brochures for the planets. We even have an inflatable solar system hanging in our room! (Thanks to an awesome donation from a parent!) Pictures of this are coming soon...
We recently worked on adjectives. The students had fun coming up with ways to describe pizza and then making slices with pizza adjectives! My favorite adjective of the day? Moldy. Yep, I guess if you leave it in the fridge too long that would describe it! :)

A Walk Through the Rain Forest
Before Spring Break, our class learned about the rain forest. We learned about the layers of the rain forest as well as the plants and animals that call it home. We graphed the temperature each day in Shelbyville and in the rain forest. Students learned why it was important to preserve the rain forests and then wrote a descriptive and persuasive paper to convince people to save them.
To conclude our rain forest unit, students were paired up and assigned a rain forest animal. Each student had to research information and find pictures of the animal. When their research was complete, they had to write a research paper to share their knowledge.
Then the kiddos worked their tails off to make presentation boards about their animals and decorate our room to look like a rain forest. We were able to put on a great display we like to call A Walk Through the Rain Forest. Parents, teachers, and other students were invited to walk through our forest and learn about the interesting life that's in it!
I couldn't be more proud of my 2nd graders!

April showers...
Please make sure your child is dressed appropriately for recess each day. The weather can vary greatly during the spring. We have recess at 11:45am so it is still a bit chilly sometimes. It's better to have a jacket and take it off than to not have a jacket at all.
