Christmas program tomorrow!!

Reminders:
-Our Christmas program is tomorrow night at 6:30pm. 2nd graders need to be in their classrooms by 6:10pm to get ready.

Spelling Change:
There will be a slight change in our Spelling routine. I will continue to send the words home on Fridays, and students should practice a little each day as usual. We will take a practice test on Wednesday so students can pinpoint the words they struggle with most. Students will take their Spelling test on Thursdays afternoon.

Christmas play on Tuesday!

-2nd graders will perform their Christmas play on Tuesday, December 11th @ 6:30pm. All 2nd graders need to report to their classroom by 6:10p to prepare for the play.

-Spelling tests will now be given on Thursdays to lighten Friday's test load. Our Spelling list for the next week goes home every Friday, so this should still leave plenty of time to practice. It is so important to practice the Spelling words at home each night because we don't get to spend a lot of time in class on Spelling because we have MANY other things to learn and do!

Friday was such a fun day! We had our monthly school convocation where they announced the Students of the Month. Congratulations to Chase who is the Student of the Month from our classroom! Our Friday celebration for the students who earned it was helping me decorate our classroom Christmas tree. We also got to make fossils to wrap up everything we learned about dinosaurs and fossils this week!

Come to the holiday parade tonight!!

Over the weekend, please be sure to go through your child's folder together. Sign their behavior sheet and send back to school. Also, I have sent home a family project that is due Monday. Students will decorate a turkey with cereal, noodles, cotton balls, buttons, seeds, grass, leaves, paper, etc. Anything you can think of! Please have fun and be creative!

Happy Halloween!

We had so much fun during our Halloween party in class! We played Pin the Bow Tie on the Skeleton and listened to spooky music. Students then got to decorate their treat bags and watch It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown! while chowing down on lots of goodies. Be safe and have fun trick-or-treating tonight!

Reminders:
- Picture day is tomorrow! Be sure to send in your order form and payment if you wish to purchase your child's fall pictures.
 - Fluoride rinse papers are due tomorrow! If you want your child to receive weekly fluoride rinses, please send back the paper with your consent and $3. If you do not want your child to receive weekly fluoride rinses, please indicate this on the paper and send it back tomorrow. I need the form back regardless of the option you choose.

Fun Class News:
We had such an exciting day! Kiddos who are in my Reading class have been reading and learning about snakes this week. Today they got to see and touch a REAL python snake! A big thank you goes out to Tara's parents for bringing in thier pet snake. I really appreciate your help; it was SUCH a fun learning experience for the students!

We also got to do Pumpkin Math today to celebrate fall! Students practiced making estimates for the pumpkin's height, weight, circumference, and seed count. We then measured and weighed the pumpkin to see who guessed most accurately. Then students got to dig out the seeds and count them all! We found over 380!

This week we learned about the life cycle of a plant, so when were were finished with Pumpkin Math students were allowed to plant some seeds from the pumpkin. We will observe their growth over the next couple of weeks!

Reading classes changed today.

Parents,
Our Reading blocks switched today. I am teaching an enrichment class that focuses primarily on 3rd grade Reading standards as well as 2nd grade standards. My students who are not participating in the Reading enrichment program will join the other 2nd grade standards. I will continue to send home my normal newsletters with weekly 2nd grade focus skills. If your child is in the Reading enrichment class, I will send home an additonal Reading newsletter with the week's info.

Don't forget...Friday marks the 198th anniversary of Francis Scott Key writing The Star-Spangled Banner. Practice the National Anthem with your child a little each night. Any student who can sing it to me on Friday will get a prize for being a National Anthem Star!!

I hope everyone enjoyed getting to sleep in a little bit this morning thanks to the fog! I know I sure did. Starting our day 2 hours late means fitting LOOOOTS of stuff into too little time. We did not get through our whole Math lesson this morning. Because of this I am cutting tonight's Math homework. On the weekly newsletter, it says students need to do Practice 2-2. I hope everyone enjoyed their short break! We have a busy fall ahead of us, but I am excited to really get going! Please stay up-to-date on your child's grades. I had a substitute teacher today while I was out testing the kiddos for DIBELS and TRC reading levels.

Enjoy the looong weekend :)

We ended the week with such a great day! Hendricks had its first Friday school meeting. We will be doing this on the last Friday of every month. At these convocations, we will recognize our students of the month and more. Today in class students enjoyed English Muffins with cream cheese and strawberry jam just like the characters from this week's story, Mr. Putter & Tabby Pour the Tea.

Weekend Assignment:
Tell your parents what your favorite thing about this week was. Show them your behavior card for the week and GET IT SIGNED! If it is not signed on Tuesday, it is a mark on Responsibility, and that is NOT a fun way to start off the new week!

*We took our first weekly Math quiz today. If a student receives a grade lower than a C-, the quiz will be sent home with a note. The note asks parents to help the student to re-do the missed problems and sign the quiz. It will need to be sent back to school the NEXT morning. The grade will not be changed. The purpose is to help the student learn from the mistakes so the next week's quiz will be better!

1st Week Complete!

Congratulations to all my sweeties for completing their first full week as 2nd graders!!

We learned the cutest little song to help us remember how to write a friendly letter. Your child brought the lyrics home today. Ask them to sing it to you!

Weekend Homework:
Students need to have this week's behavior card signed by a parent. Empty your green folder EXCEPT for the behavior card. Share your favorite things about this week with your parents!

Our students are very fortunate to use iPads in the classroom twice a week to enrich our skills in Math, Reading, and other areas. Today we went over the rules for using these iPads and discussed the appropriate way to handle them. Your child has signed a contract agreeing to obey these rules. Please reveiw the rules with your child, sign the contract, and send it back to school. Students will not be allowed to use the iPads until I receive the signed contract.

Welcome to 2nd Grade!

Today we began our first full week of school! Phew, the day flew right by! I am really enjoying getting to know the students. Please take the time to meet me and see our classroom tomorrow night from 6-7p. There will be a short activity and prize for your child.

This Week in....
Reading: We are working on words with short a and i. Our focus skill is identifying the character and setting in the stories we read.
Math: We are working on writing addition and subtraction number sentences.
Language Arts: We are focusing on statements, questions, and complete sentences.
